Worship FAQs
Welcome! We're so glad you're here.
If you haven't been to a worship service with us yet, here are some questions you may be wondering...
What is St. Peter's style of worship?
We offer one regular worship service on Sundays at 10:30 am for in-person and virtual Zoom participation. Our liturgical style is participatory and generally low-church. Although our sanctuary includes a high altar, for the last two decades we have celebrated the service from a floor level altar table.
What should I expect during worship?
During worship, members of the congregation are invited to read the daily readings and psalms. After the homily, we offer a time for community reflection where all are invited to come up and share a reflection further opening the Word, making this a “participatory homily.” On any given Sunday, we may hear reflections from a vestry member, someone who is attending for the first time, or a homeless guest who is seeking refuge at the church.
What does St. Peter's value?
We value inclusive language that is accessible to the diversity of our congregation. We draw on The Book of Common Prayer as well as other global Anglican resources like A New Zealand Prayer Book. We create a new worship bulletin for each liturgical season, and also honor other ecumenical/secular seasons like the Season of Creation, Black History Month, and Pride Month, where we celebrate the lives and contributions of our LGBTQ+ members. Our worship explores questions and encourages faith exploration rather than requiring answers and certainty.
Where should I park?
We have a church parking lot right next to the church off of Trumbull Ave. On Sunday mornings you are welcome to park anywhere in the lot. There is also free street parking right in front of the church on both Trumbull and Michigan Avenues.
Is the sanctuary accessible?
Unfortunately, our sanctuary is not yet ADA accessible. However, we do have a portable ramp that we are able to set up on the steps outside the church. There is a bathroom on the first floor of the church but it cannot be wheeled into.
What should I wear?
Many of us dress casually. There are also often folks joining us who are coming off of the street. You are welcome to wear whatever will make you feel most comfortable!
How long is worship?
Worship itself is usually around an hour, from 10:30-11:30am.
What happens after worship?
After worship we gather for a modest potluck and coffee hour with tea and coffee. You are welcome to bring a dish to pass, but not expected to!
Can I bring children or young people with me?
Yes! We welcome people of all ages at our worship service. We have a small table in the back of the sanctuary with some kids games and toys. We also have a quiet room ("the library") near the sanctuary that could be used for nursing or supervised play time.
What if I don't know what to say or do?
That's very okay! To help guide us, our worship booklet contains prompts for when the congregation should speak aloud, sit, or stand. We follow those prompts as best we can, but our focus is on being together in Beloved Community, not getting things just right! We support one another in figuring it out together and we look forward to supporting you too.
